I'll echo you on that Rachel. Those pandemics hit us right about the same time as now. And La Nina can possibly be one of the factors that trigger the spread of the virus. There are now flu vaccines that are available but it is no sure guarantee that one will be spared if another pandemic strikes us, however I think it would raise one's chances of not getting the disease.

Sorry, but what warped imagination could have come up with the idea of creating a being part goat part spider? I'd rather stick my own ligaments (even if they stop functioning so well) than have any ligament replacement from this source. There also raises issues over rights of animals - I don't suppose the goat had any say in that she was turned into? Indeed the answer is above: "breeding animals to produce the things that we want", in other words, exploiting them.

Good points, Murielle. It may sound extreme to some, but a lot, if not all, disposable packaging should be banned if it isn't easily recyclable, truly biodegradable, etc. I remember visiting Europe in the 80s and you were simply not given shopping bags. Everyone knew it and so they brought their own reusable. It's nothing new. But then, since it was legal, all the shops gave plastic bags and people got used to the convenience. Now the world is choking on them. Whose fault is it? Business...

The garbage problem is a problem we are all facing. Do you remember what age you where when you realized that something you trow in the dustbin doesn't disappear forever, but just get's moved to some other place where you don't see or smell it anymore? I know I was quiet old when I figured that out! It takes all of us to help fix this problem, finding new dump sites is not the answer. Its consumption and our economies that are at the basis of this problem... Over the past year my family has worked hard to reduce our house hold waste. We are not at 1/4 of the waste we produced last year. Buying less stuff and being careful when we buy as to what the packaging will mean in terms of waste. We also try to avoid plastic as much as we can. For groceries that means going to the local stores where we get paper packaging instead of the mass-produced packages of bigger stores... We also have chickens now (4 of them), they take care of almost all our kitchen waste in give us super darn good eggs in return!

I understand what you mean, the risk here is that , this kind of breakthroughs are not showing its full blown potential yet as well as the damages it could create. there's still a big gap between the conventional and the artificial . in conventional the process is always longer , the risk is lower but can't expect a much result. In artificial it's basically a shortcut of all the process that should be undergone. the risk is much higher but the result could be incredibly far more than the expected. So it's up to us how ready we are to face consequences when we dared to be out- of the - box ....

hahahhahahhah omg! we have this rude saying that 'beggars are not choosers' this is not the time for narrow mindedness or superficial perspective, We know that government has to do something or to assist its people who are at the meantime lacking resources but it's also important that the assistance should be all about necessity or needs and not just wants... As for the people's concern, learn to adjust to your current financial situation , by living within your means.. it has nothing to do with freedom to choose when you have no financial freedom yet, well you can only practice self indulgence and self gratification when you have the capacity to do it on your own already.

wowwwww! I'm happy to read this article. It's like seeing a rainbow after the rain. It's just right not to subsidize fossil fuel anymore ,especially right now that those countries that kept on manipulating, dictating and monopolizing the price of their fuel. When they talk the world has no choice but to listen..What we need is someone that will stand firm and has political will to at least initiate difficult and risky changes like this. For sure this would be blocked by other powerful leaders, but my opinion is bring it on to the people , surely people will support this noble advocacy .....I'll wait for the day that fossil fuel has no choice but to sell it on a bargain price coz no one will be wanted it anymore!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree. In a way the space program is great, but who does it really benefit? The usual people of course: big business and the military, with some medical applications, etc. Talking about colonizing within a few years is just trying to inspire people to dream – a dream that none of them will share in.

that's cool to dream big. Bigger beyond imagination but these candidates should not out-brag each other in terms of outer space plans, there are more important issues here on earth , specifically in the United States of America. It's ridiculous to make outer space plans while there's humongous pile of basic needs problems.....No wonder Barack Obama is still very confident that he'll get re- elected

I definitely agree to this. Aside from the aesthetic effect on the road with grown trees, also the quality of air we breathe will of course be improved and the trees would give a calming effect especially to the motorist.....I love trees so much!!!!

A bit Frankenstein-ish to genetically engineer goats to harvest medical materials. I see the advantages too, but isn't going too far? Should we be messing with animals in this way? OK, it's just milk, and the goats are supposedly not being harmed, but there are serious ethical and practical questions concerning this kind of stuff. Nor do we know the potential consequences of creating new breeds like these
